Nintendo Switch 2 Outsells Original Switch In First Full Year

Nintendo Switch 2 is clearly doing better than many people expected. According to the company’s latest financial report, Switch 2 has officially sold more units in its first full fiscal year than the original Switch managed during the same period.

The Nintendo Switch 2 reached 19.86 million units sold in its first full fiscal year, clearly passing the 15.05 million units sold by the original Switch during FY2018. The company also pointed out that the console’s sales have been much “more concentrated” during its launch year compared to previous Nintendo systems. Because of that, the company is expecting sales to slow down in the second fiscal year, with forecasts showing a possible 17% drop to around 16.5 million units sold next year.

The difference becomes even clearer when comparing the launch periods of both consoles. Nintendo Switch 2 sold around 19 million units in its first 10 months, while the original Switch sold about 13 million during the same period. The Switch 2 also reached 10.3 million sales in just four months, compared to 4.7 million for the original Switch.

A big reason for this strong growth is the high demand and better stock availability of the Switch 2. Unlike the original Switch launch, Nintendo has managed to keep more consoles available in stores, making it easier for players to buy one early.

Another reason behind this success is the lineup of exclusive games, such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, which have given players strong reasons to buy the Switch 2. Mario Kart World has already sold 14.7 million copies, while Donkey Kong Bananza has reached 4.52 million copies sold.

In other Nintendo news, the company is spreading fake internal information in an attempt to expose leakers following months of Switch 2 and future project leaks, according to claims from multiple insider sources. For more Nintendo related coverage, keep checking GameObserver.
