Call of Duty is finally leaving old consoles behind. The next game in the series, widely rumored to be Modern Warfare 4, will not release on PS4, and thus likely not on Xbox One either.
Activision confirmed this after recent rumors claimed the game was being tested on PS4. The company quickly denied it on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

Even if Xbox One was not mentioned in that message, it strongly suggests the game will not release there either. This means the next Call of Duty will be made only for current platforms like PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In addition, following Microsoft’s 10-year deal to bring the series to Nintendo, there is speculation that the next title could be the first to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2, since it would not have the same technical limitations as older hardware.
This is a big change for the franchise. Even though the new consoles came out in 2020, Call of Duty games have continued to support older systems until now. In fact, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released last year, is now confirmed as the last game to release on PS4 and Xbox One. The decision to leave old consoles behind should help developers a lot. By not working with 13-year-old hardware anymore, they can focus on better performance and improved graphics.
In other news, if you play Call of Duty on Xbox through Game Pass, there’s bad news. It will no longer be available on day one. Instead, it will arrive about a year later, around the holiday season. For more Call of Duty related coverage, keep checking GameObserver.
