If you’ve ever wondered if there’s a way to see the player number for games on PlayStation 5 like you can on Steam, there’s good news, as Sony is officially testing a new feature that does exactly that.
The new feature was discovered by YouTube creator Mystic, and is currently available through the invite-only PS5 beta program. It adds a new widget to the PS5 Welcome Hub and gives players a better look of the most active games on the console in their country.

The widget has two main sections. The first one is called “Top 10” and lists the 10 most-played games in your country based on player activity during the week. The second section is “Trending Now,” which lists games that are “surging in popularity right now.”
Even though many people would compare this system to Steam, there are a few differences. The first difference is that, unlike Steam’s live concurrent player counts, Sony’s widget tracks total active users over a seven-day period. This means a player only needs to launch a game once during the week to be included in the numbers. Another difference is that the data is regional instead of global, so the rankings can change depending on the country. For example, if a game is trending in one region, it does not mean it is also trending in another country.
Still, the feature is currently in beta testing, so Sony could still make further changes or even decide not to release it at all, so we should not get our hopes up too early. As we get more information about this feature, we’ll make sure to keep things updated here at GameObserver.
In other news, Sony has filed a new patent for an AI-powered system that could automatically turn PlayStation gameplay clips into social media highlight reels.
