The puzzling world of Professor Layton is going multi-platform, as Level-5 just announced that the upcoming Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be releasing on PlayStation 5 and Steam in a simultaneous launch with the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2!
This was quite a surprising announcement to be made at their Level-5 Vision showcase, as Professor Layton has often been seen as an honorary Nintendo franchise given its past exclusivity. With such a big game that has been years in the making though, it seems Level-5 are now opting to go beyond the confines of just one platform.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam sees players solving puzzles to progress the story and unravel the mysteries in the town of Steam Bison. As the first new game in the series in years, there will be more puzzles than ever before in any other Professor Layton game.
As for the narrative, the invention of advanced steam engines have caused a technological revolution in Steam Bison, but with a ghostly cowboy making his appearance in the town amidst mysterious happenings, Luke Triton has called on the Professor for his help.

Another reveal made today at the Level-5 Vision showcase was that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will have a theme song composed by the absolutely legendary Joe Hisaishi. Known for his extensive works with the Studio Ghibli soundtracks, Hisaishi is an extraordinary choice for a Professor Layton game. It makes sense that Level-5 would be able to get in touch with him, given their Ghibli connections from the Ni No Kuni series.
Level-5 have had a lot of success recently, so we’re not surprised to see their multi-platform shift for Layton. The release of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time was an enormous success across Switch, PlayStation and PC, and they might just be looking to recreate that reception with Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, launching later this year.
