This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of Super Mario, and Nintendo have been celebrating in a big way. The recently released The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been an enormous success, and Nintendo seem keen on keeping the ball rolling. In a rather unprecedented move, Nintendo just released the full soundtracks to both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Spotify.
The gaming giant almost never releases their soundtracks to Spotify, instead opting to use their own Nintendo Music app instead. However, to celebrate both the anniversary of the franchise and the Galaxy film, Nintendo are releasing them as a limited-time exclusive collaboration with Spotify. The collaboration is available to stream globally, but as an exclusive partnership they seemingly won’t be available on other music streaming services like Apple Music.

As this is a special collaboration, Spotify is marking the occasion with a unique playhead whilst users stream the Super Mario Galaxy soundtracks. When listening to any song from the albums or Nintendo-made playlists, the playhead that indicates your progress through the song gets replaced by a Luma, soaring along the progress bar as you listen to the song.
Along with both full Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack albums, there are also two new playlists to enjoy Mario music in larger collections or shuffled, perfect for long journeys! The first combines the two Super Mario Movie soundtracks with a combined 61 songs between them, whilst the other merges both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 soundtracks into one giant 5 hour long experience.

Spotify will be running global promotions to support the streaming release, with outdoor advertisements on billboards and posters being put up in major cities from Los Angeles to Osaka. The advertisements display both iconic Super Mario Galaxy game artworks, which emphasize the “limited time” collaboration being only available on Spotify.
This could be the only time Nintendo ever make their music available on Spotify, as they’re still heavily supporting Nintendo Music with continuous new releases, so be sure to give them a stream if you’re interesting. The limited-time albums don’t currently have a specified removal date. We’ll be sure to report on all further updates, so check back often to GameObserver for the latest!
