Destiny 2’s Final Update Sends Steam Player Numbers Soaring

While Bungie appears ready to move beyond Destiny 2, the latest response to its final content update shows that fans still want the series to have a future. The launch of Monument of Triumph, the final update for Destiny 2, brought a huge number of players back to the game. It reached 167,867 concurrent players on Steam, the highest number seen in two years.

This huge jump in players wasn’t only because of the update. Before it launched, fans organized a mass login event and encouraged as many people as possible to play at the same time. It was their way of showing Bungie and Sony that Destiny still has a large and active player base. The effort also supported a Destiny 3 petition, as fans wanted to make it clear that they still want a sequel. So many people logged in that some players faced server queues, and the surge was large enough to affect SteamDB’s tracking data.

Destiny 2’s final content update is out now.

As mentioned earlier, Monument of Triumph is the final content update for Destiny 2. The game will remain online, but no further expansions or content updates are planned. Bungie has already confirmed that no sequel is in development, as its focus is turning toward “incubating our next games” and supporting Marathon.

Speaking of Marathon, the game hasn’t had the start Bungie was hoping for. Reports claim it cost more than $200 million to make, but it has struggled to attract and keep a large player base since launch. Even so, it doesn’t look like the game is going to shut down anytime soon, as Bungie has said that it plans to support Marathon for “many years.”
